Border controls are a thing of the past in over 50% of European Union countries. This is a result of the Schengen Convention, an integral component of European law. The ten countries that joined the EU in 2004 are not yet full protagonists in the Schengen Convention, however, so you will need a valid passport or ID card to enter those countries. The same applies to Ireland and the United Kingdom.
You will also need a valid passport or ID card when arriving at, or leaving, an outer boundary of the European Union. When leaving the EU, your passport will obviously be required for entry into the country of your final destination.
It is wise to carry your passport or ID card
with you when travelling within the European
Union as you may be asked to prove your
identity. Border inspections can be
reintroduced for a limited period for reasons of
public order or national security.
Check that any children travelling with
you have their own passport or ID card, or are
registered on your passport.
